Texts about seed paper
Introduction to seed paper
Seed paper is a sustainable alternative to traditional paper, created to literally bring your message to life. The recipient reads the card, plants it in the garden afterwards, and is surprised by a small garden full of flowers, herbs, or vegetables, creating food for bees, butterflies, and other pollinators.
Choose the right seed paper for your project
All paper types and seeds are tested four times a year in our test gardens with positive results. This way, you can be sure you are choosing reliable quality. We make sure the paper not only looks beautiful and feels premium, but also grows successfully. From flyers, invitations, and business cards to sturdy cards and premium print products, every paper type has its own character and application. This allows you to choose the perfect product for your message and project.

Sustainability
Sustainability is important to us in every part of the process. That is why we would like to share what we already do well and what we continue to improve.
What we already do
1. Recycled materials as our starting point
Our three types of seed paper are made from recycled materials. Each has its own origin, production process, and appearance.
- 120 gsm seed paper: Machine-made in the Netherlands from 100% recycled paper fibres.
- 200 gsm seed paper: Handmade in India from recycled cotton. According to the manufacturer, no bleaching agents or dyes are used in the papermaking process.
- 250 gsm seed paper: Handmade in South Africa from recycled post-consumer paper.
By giving existing materials a new purpose, we create paper with a second function: it can be planted after use.
2. Printing with water-based inks
Seed paper requires a different approach from conventional printing paper. After all, it contains real seeds.
That’s why we use a printing process adapted to the unique structure of seed paper. We print with water-based inkjet inks and take the sensitivity of the seeds into account.
We continue to investigate and document the properties of our materials and inks to better understand the products we create.
3. Testing whether our seed paper grows
A plantable card is especially meaningful when something can actually grow from it.
That’s why we regularly test the germination performance of our different paper types and seed mixes. We also test printed seed paper, as the printing process can affect the seeds.
Seeds are living products. Whether they germinate depends on factors such as seed variety, storage time, temperature, moisture, and care. For this reason, we cannot guarantee germination or flowering.
Through regular testing, we continue to improve the quality of our seed paper.
4. Working with carefully selected producers
We don’t manufacture all our paper ourselves. That’s why we believe it’s important to know our production partners and work closely with them on quality and responsible production.
Our 200 gsm seed paper is handmade in Jaipur, India. The manufacturer has provided a written declaration stating that all workers are at least 18 years old, that child labour and forced labour are prohibited, and that wages meet or exceed legal requirements. This information comes directly from the manufacturer and has not been independently audited.
Our 250 gsm seed paper is produced by a social enterprise in South Africa that transforms recycled paper into new handmade seed paper.
We maintain an ongoing dialogue with our suppliers about materials, production processes and working conditions.
5. Taking care of our seeds
Seeds are at the heart of our product.
We work with selected suppliers and collect information about the composition, quality and origin of the seeds we use.
Where available, we also keep supplier declarations confirming that the seeds are not genetically modified.
Our different seed paper types contain various flower, herb and vegetable seeds. We continuously work to improve the reliability of our seed information and achieve the best possible germination performance.
6. Reducing waste in our production
Printing and finishing seed paper generates paper offcuts. We collect these leftovers for recycling.
We also aim to organise our production as efficiently as possible to minimise unnecessary material use.
When it comes to packaging, we consider the materials used and opportunities to incorporate recycled resources.

Why seed paper is such a successful advertising product
Most advertisements are thrown away after just a few seconds. Seed paper works differently. It transforms a message into an experience that people remember and interact with.
The recipient does not simply read the message, but plants it and watches it grow into flowers, herbs, or plants. This creates an emotional connection with the brand and gives the message a second life.
Because the paper keeps growing after it is received, the advertising message stays visible for much longer than traditional print products. It creates a positive moment, starts conversations, and leaves behind something tangible and meaningful. Seed paper combines sustainability, storytelling, and experience in one product. That is why it is so successful for brands, events, campaigns, and companies that want their communication to create a lasting impression.

Design guidelines and technical info
Designing for seed paper works a little differently than traditional paper. Because of the recycled materials and the seeds inside the paper, seed paper is printed on special printers. This means your design needs a bit more attention to ensure a clean and beautiful print result without streaks.
Checklist
- Have you selected the correct format for your design?
- Leave 60% white space in your design. Avoid large solid areas, no full background colours, and avoid 100% ink coverage.
- Choose the correct file format. Your design should be saved in high resolution and in one of the following formats to ensure a sharp print result: PDF, PNG, or JPEG.
Better to avoid
Borders in the design
Because seed paper is not perfectly straight and can slightly shift in the printer, a variation of 1-3 mm is unavoidable. When using borders, this variation becomes more visible and can make the print appear misaligned.
Thin fonts
Very thin fonts may disappear into the paper texture. Choose a clear and readable font.
Light grey text
Light grey colours may fade into the paper. We recommend using a darker shade for better readability.
What works well?
QR codes
Use a minimum size of 2.5 x 2.5 cm and choose a dark colour to ensure good scanability.
Photos
Photos are possible, but avoid large full-colour areas. Please note that seeds may appear inside faces or detailed parts of the image, which can create an unexpected effect. Unfortunately, this cannot be adjusted.
Bleed in the design
Does your design include bleed? Add an extra 5 mm on all sides of the artwork and extend the design into this area. Your design will be printed on a larger sheet and trimmed afterwards, allowing the artwork to continue nicely to the edges. More information on bleed.
Margins/safe zone
Keep important text and logos at least 5 mm from the cutting edge
Resolution
We recommend 300 dpi for raster images and photos at final print size (minimum of 150 dpi for okay quality)
File format
PDF (print-ready)
Color mode/profile
CMYK using PSO Uncoated v3 (FOGRA52)
Good to know
- All paper types are off-white or beige rather than bright white. This is due to the use of recycled materials without chemicals. Colours may therefore appear slightly different than expected. Tip: make colours slightly darker.
- Because seed paper is not perfectly straight and may shift slightly during printing, a variation of 1-3 mm is unavoidable.
- Due to the seeds inside the paper, ink can sometimes collect around a seed, which may occasionally create a small streak in the design.
Planting instructions
You are using a special type of paper, and the recipient should know that too. Make sure to include planting instructions or a reference to seed paper in your design.
